January 2008, Lawrenceville, GA
Under the cover of darkness, a robber steals a forklift from a construction site.  He drives to a nearby bank and breaks a remote ATM from its mooring. Placing the ATM in the bed of a stolen pickup truck, the thief thinks he’s home free. Using the location information and map from ESP,  police easily locate their suspect on the highway.  He tries to flee, however, when making a quick turn, the weight of the ATM causes the truck to flip on its side.  The suspect is taken into custody. The ATM machine and the full $102,000 inside are recovered by police.

Drive-Through Disaster
Three thieves in Dallas, Texas, created their own drive-through window with disastrous results. The men smashed a stolen van into a store hoping to snag the ATM machine inside. But, the crash generated so much debris that the tires of the van lost traction and the van wouldn’t budge. The crooks took off on foot, and were nabbed just a few minutes later.

Curb Service
How many robbers does it take to rob a bank with a concrete curb? Apparently, it took three of them to come up with this ingenious idea. The trio used the curb to break a window and get inside. They then rammed the curb into the ATM, knocking the ATM off of its bolts. While carrying the machine out of the store, one of the robbers tripped, dropping the ATM. Another fell out of the getaway van as it pulled up to the scene. The driver took off, leaving the ATM, the clumsy thief and an unanswered question behind: Where did they get a concrete curb?

Wanted: Map and Brain.
A misdirected robber in Boston went into a copying center, presented a note and said “this is a bank robbery.” The copy guy replied “this isn’t a bank.” The robber asked for directions to a bank, went there and robbed it, netting only $200. Shortly afterwards, he found his way to another bank, robbed it and pulled in just $25. As he drove away, he got a flat tire, then was covered in red, when a dye pack activated. Undeterred, he continued on his way, found a gas station, and asked to borrow a customer’s cell phone to report his truck stolen. Police nabbed him at the gas station. A spokesperson said the thief “must have been on something.”

Slow Lane Stick-Up
A bizarre robbery in Philadelphia was thwarted after the suspect tried to escape using his walker. Witnesses say the thief was hobbling down the street carrying a pile of money when a dye pack activated. With himself and his transportation covered in red, he tried to make a “dash” into a nearby cab. He wasn’t fast enough. A passerby grabbed the walker from the thief, preventing him from making his getaway.

"Career" Criminal
Considering a job in banking? Here's a tip. Don't rob the bank when submitting your resume! During a recent robbery attempt in Texas, a bank robber wrote a holdup note on his personal resume. Demonstrating his ability to think ahead, the robber covered his name and other identifying information with black tape. But, apparently this applicant doesn't work well under pressure. He left the resume behind while making his getaway. The police peeled back the tape, identified the robber and arrested him.

Fresh Out
Fresh out of prison after a ten-year stint, a robber must also have been fresh out of stationary supplies -- like blank paper, for instance. The morning after his release, he attempted to rob a bank by writing a holdup note on the back of his parole form. He was easily identified and arrested. The previous crime that got him ten years in the slammer? Bank robbery.

Convenience Banking
Apparently, some bandits prefer the city environment for their robbery attempts because it's just so darn convenient. If one bank turns you down, there's always another branch around the corner. In Philadelphia, a robber handed a teller a demand note, but was discouraged from making a "withdrawal." No problem. He just walked a block to another branch of the same bank and presented the same note to the teller. This time, he left with cash along with a dye pack which made catching him very convenient for the cops.

Caught Red-Handed!
A dye pack is one of the more popular ways to foil a bank robber. Under the parameters of the new Reg P, some security officers are using dye packs instead of bait money.

A dye pack consists of a pack of real bills (usually $10's or $20's) with a device in the middle of the cash that activates when it is triggered by a radio signal. The activation releases red smoke, red dye and CS tear gas from the pack........

We talked to Jim McCann, Eastern Regional Sales Manager of ICI Americas Inc., a leading manufacturer of dye packs, in his office in Tampa, Florida. Jim has been working with ICI's SECURITY PAC?electronic protection system for twenty years. Jim says, "New technology allows ICI's device to be housed in a flexible pack, so that a robber would not notice any difference between a pack of money containing the dye pack and a regular pack of cash without the device."

A bank robber in Columbus, Ohio, was reportedly taken by surprise when an explosive dye pack went off in his trousers.

Minutes after the National City Bank in downtown Columbus was robbed, police saw John Gladney, 40, about a block from them, walking oddly and in obvious pain.

ATM Dye Pack Now Available

There is a new product on the market that automatically activates during a violent attack on an ATM and disperses ink over the entire contents of the unit's money cassette. This, of course, makes the money useless to a robber.

The system reported to us is called SECURI-DAB. It is marketed by ICI Security Systems. It consists of a battery powered transmitter about the size of a VHS cassette mounted inside the ATM. The ink is inside each cassette. The battery which activates the system has a two year life.

This product is already in use in France, and now is available in the United States.
